St Thomas is a beautiful Caribbean island with predictable charm, steady climate, beautiful ocean colors, bright sun, flora, fauna and drifting warm winds. We were fortunate to be guests of our dear friends Gary and Karen for a week in January. Although we had visited before, it did not dampen our enthusiasm as we again were eager to spend time with them. The week was delightful and relaxing on Cowpet Bay

We Learn

Gary and Karen

Gary and Karen

Sitting on their porch reading, talking, enjoying the food and the views was extraordinary.
Gary is scholarly. When he rolls his eyes, lifts his hand and raises a finger, he is ready to speak with volumes of information about history, economics, politics, boating and fishing.
Karen, energetic and as feisty as a fish on a hook is much the same. She can let go with a stream of awareness ranging from health care, cooking, island history and politics to crustaceans and everything in between; facts gleaned from experience with a heavy dose of reading.

We Eat
Their condo is so prepared for visitors; you have no doubt you are welcome. They have stocked the place well.
—- Why do you have all this food, Karen?
—- What if all of a sudden I have to cook? Anyone… friends, family, workers… might come by at any time. And they do. I need to be ready!

We Simply Enjoy
They squeeze all they can out of life by not wasting a day, even under the guise of relaxation.
On one day, we boated with Andy, their friend and Gary’s fishing mate; a man well-versed in just about everything Caribbean. The day was lovely. He was a gem, showing us how chasing the dream is perhaps more important than catching it. Gary and Karen were as excited about the tour as if it had been their first time, which it surely was not. They love the place, and it’s palpable.

An evening trip on the ferry to St. John and dinner at Zo-Zo’s could not have been more romantic. It was one of the many times they hosted and celebrated Diane’s birthday during the week. Ever a toast!

After the week, Diane and I had loads of information that might qualify us for an advanced degree. And we had a barrel full of rest with all that time to relax.
As we departed, our good friends chirped together and a capella, “You should have stayed longer!”
Right again Karen. Right again, Gary.

Thank you. We will be back.
