REMINDER Come to the Festival …
One full year in advance, Teddy deCaro wrote me. She wanted me to speak at the first ever Italian Cultural Festival at Our Lady of La Salette Shrine in Attleboro, MA on September 22, 2018.
She told me of how she enjoyed my books and had a little trepidation in asking me to speak. I wasn’t sure why since I love to do these events, especially those that honor our culture.
As I looked through the robust and thorough planning documents for the day, I replied, “You certainly have planned ahead.”
Teddy responded, “Thank you, but the truth is, I am a Virgo. Virgos are notorious for organization!”
I sensed her enthusiasm. I liked that, so I answered “Yes’ with little hesitation. Teddy seemed quite pleased, as was I.
The festival honors Padre Pio, a man devoted to helping those in need, on the 50th anniversary of his life in Heaven. He founded a hospital in Italy, La Casa di Sollievo della Sofferenza (The House for the Relief of the Suffering).
In that spirit, The Festival Committee has chosen Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children and The Shrine to donate proceeds from the day’s events.
The Festival begins at NOON with an introduction of dignitaries and ends with a solemn Mass in honor of Padre Pio at 6 PM.
Admission is free. Attendees will be asked to donate non-perishable canned goods which will help the Soup Kitchen at La Salette Shrine.
There will be rides, face painting, a storybook hour for children, a concert of Italian songs, tarantella dancers (come dance!) and, of course, Italian food.
I will give a presentation entitled, “Write your Life” that encompasses Italian immigration and stories about growing up Italian in Rhode Island.
Author Terry Moruzzi Herman will launch her children’s book, Stella the Coccinella with a children’s story time and reading.
There will be a religious music concert with organists, pianists and singers.
To honor Padre Pio, there will be a round-table discussing his life with special guests who knew him and know his family. They will bring Padre’s relics. The Capuchin Friars from the San Lorenzo Friary will participate and moderate the round-table.
The highlight of the Italian Cultural Festival will be a Rosary Procession with our Lady of La Salette and Padre Pio followed by a solemn Mass of honor at 6 PM.
Come join us for this remarkable day. Share your stories, your heritage and your faith.
